Deer dogs and Naked Chickens:
This story took place during a time I was working out of town. My wife and kids had a pen full of fine laying chickens. They had roosters
that liked to sit on the kid's arms. I had about 13 fine hunting dogs who were busy digging holes under their fence without my knowledge.
The wife and kids returned after a day of shopping to find as she said " Half dead, naked, gasping chickens lying all over the
yard." My oldest child was so upset she tied a dead naked chicken around the neck of the deer dog she had pegged as the master hole digger. The neighbors said that dog wore that dead naked chicken for one week and you could smell him way before you saw
him.
They finally got over this incident and replenished the hen house. As bad luck would have it, it happened 2 more times. The third time I
came home from working out of town I was in for a shock. I sat on the couch, watching TV and waited to hear my hunting dogs barking in the background. The first clue something was wrong should have been when I noticed my loyal hunting dogs didn't welcome me
home when I got out of my truck. I thought they must be really content as all was quiet. As I unwound on the couch from the drive home, the quietness of my dogs nagged me.
I headed to the dog pen only to find the door open and 1 leather collar on the ground. It looked like it had part of a dead chicken
attached to it. My fine hunting dogs were not to be found. After some heated discussion with my wife, I got the whole story. I guess she was more than a little upset that the deer dogs had cleaned out the chicken yard 3 times! She said she sold all of them
and threw in the fine leather collars - as I would not need them for some time.
Hunting tip: Make sure deer dogs stay in the pen!
